Lodging Info

Because it's not a good idea to sleep on a GS.

Nashville itself is a bit, shall we say, touristy. Therefore, much of the lodging in and near Nashville tends to be expensive on the weekends, which can cut into your tire and stator budget. Never fear - there are lots of reasonably priced lodging options in the nearby towns of Columbus and Bloomington, both a pleasant 15 - 20 minute ride away from Nashville.

With that said, there are dozens of charming and unique bed-and-breakfasts, inns, and lodges available if your budget is a bit more grand and you or your significant other require a bit more luxury. Riding and romance go together beautifully sometimes.

If you're a fresh air fan, there are a few camping options nearby. Since we will gather and ride rain or shine (no rain date due to the North Carolina GS Rally two weeks later), I highly recommend getting a roof over your head. Camping tends to be overcrowded and expensive ($20 - $25 and up), so an inexpensive motel doesn't cost much more, especially if you double up.

Recommendations

Motels: There's a movement afoot to get all possible GS riders to stay at or near the Sleep Inn in Columbus. It's clean, comfortable, and there's a great inexpensive restaurant (Riviera) right outside with enough room for a good-size group. If you'd like to enjoy the company of fellow GSers in the evenings, this is an excellent choice. Rates are running a bit spendy ($80 - $100 a night), but there are less expensive alternatives nearby since this is near the interstate (I-65).

Camping: The Last Resort is a private campground just east of Nashville on Highway 46. It's very nice and well kept, seems to be quiet, and if you're quick, you might be able to snag one of their newly remodeled (and air conditioned!) Kamping Kabins and get the best of both worlds.

Bed & Breakfast: I've stayed at the Story Inn, which is a bed and breakfast located deep in the twisties on Highway 135 south of Nashville. The location is quiet and scenic, the rooms are charming and unique, and the restaurant is absolutely first class with superb food. Expensive, but well worth it. There are also far worse ways to start a day of riding than a hearty gourmet breakfast followed by 15-20 minutes of untangling Highway 135 on the way to the meeting point in Nashville.

Actually, the Brown County area is just crawling with excellent B&Bs, Inns, and Lodges in several price ranges. You really can't go wrong if you have a few bucks to spend and a significant other to snuggle.

No, it's OK. The rest of us won't mind. We'll be over here in this motel by the interstate, talking about stators and fork oil until the wee hours...

Google - Hotels near Columbus, Indiana
The great Google oracle speaketh. "Jonathan Moore Pike" is Indiana Highway 46. Nashville is 16 miles West of the intersection of IN-46 and I-65. There are some local hotels of possibly dubious quality that don't show up on Google, if you like the smell of trucker spit on your pillow.

Google Again - Hotels near Bloomington, Indiana
Bloomington is about 20 - 25 minutes West of Nashville (a pleasantly hilly ride on IN-46), and is well stocked with hotels in every price range. There's a Motel 6 and a Scottish Inn in Bloomington, but they don't have the finest reputation. The Scottish does boast of newly remodeled rooms on their web site this year, so who knows? You first.

The Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park seems to be full already. Weekends always fill up months ahead of time in the state park inns, despite meals prepared by the same government employees responsible for school lunches. It'll be full of kids anyway.
